Tonga wrapped up their OFC U-16 Men’s Championship – Qualifying campaign in emphatic fashion, delighting home fans at Teufaiva Stadium with a commanding 5-1 win over American Samoa.
After the heartbreak of conceding two late goals in their previous match against Vanuatu, the side came out with purpose and energy, determined to close their campaign on a high. Their intent was immediately rewarded when Benton Setefano struck in just the third minute, finishing off a lively opening to give Tonga an early 1-0 lead.
The momentum stayed with the home side throughout the first half, and Sioeli Veatupu came close to doubling the advantage with a powerful run and shot that forced a sharp save from American Samoa goalkeeper Taalo Lauofo.
Despite Tonga’s dominance, American Samoa managed to draw level in the 33rd minute through Pati Faleagafulu, whose individual brilliance saw him race clear and finish calmly past Gordon Li.
But Tonga responded with maturity and intensity in the second half, eventually reclaiming control. Substitute Fonua Moala made an instant impact, starting a counter attack deep in his own half and finishing it himself after following up on a rebound from Lauofo’s save to restore the lead in the 63rd minute.
Tonga extended their advantage in the 70th minute through Sitaleki Kautai, who finished off a dangerous delivery from Siaki Lonitenisi after the American Samoan defence failed to clear a corner. The visitors’ chances of a comeback took a major hit when their captain Tau Lealuga was sent off in the 75th minute after receiving a second yellow card.
Lonitenisi, a constant creative spark throughout the match, was finally rewarded for his efforts with a well-placed finish into the far corner just a minute later. Kautai then capped off a brilliant performance by adding his second goal and Tonga’s fifth in stoppage time.
It was a complete and confident performance from Tonga, showcasing the young side’s attacking potential and pride on home soil. The final whistle was met with cheers from the local crowd, as Tonga closed their campaign in style and with plenty to build on for the future.
End.
