The first-ever Talent Development Scheme (TDS) Major Tournament concluded in spectacular fashion as Vava’u secured a historic 1-0 victory over Vahe-Loto (Central District) in the final, held today at the Loto-Tonga Soccer Centre.
While mini tournaments have been held previously for Tongatapu TDS Centres, this was the first time the competition included Vava’u. The island team made an immediate impact, proving their readiness and resilience to claim the championship in their debut appearance.

The tournament began on Tuesday with an opening ceremony that set the tone for an exciting week of football.
Tournament Highlights
Day 1:
- Vava’u 6-1 Town/Western District: Vava’u announced their arrival with a commanding win, showcasing their attacking flair.
- Central District 3-1 Eastern District: Central District also impressed, earning a decisive victory.

Day 2:
- Vava’u 2-0 Eastern District: Another strong performance by Vava’u, demonstrating their defensive discipline and offensive sharpness.
- Central District 6-2 Town/Western District: Central District continued their dominance, setting up a clash of titans for the final day of the round robin.
Day 3:
The anticipated meeting between Vava’u and Central District in the round-robin stage ended in a narrow 2-1 win for Central District, setting the stage for an epic rematch in the final.
In a tightly contested final, Vava’u showed exceptional preparation and determination. Both teams displayed skill and pace, thrilling the crowd throughout the match.
The only goal came from Vava’u’s Siaki Lonitenisi of ‘Utui, who calmly converted a penalty following a foul by a Central District defender. Despite several attempts from Central District’s captain, Tevita Falepapalangi, Vava’u’s defense held firm to secure the win.

After the match, the Chairman of the Technical Department, Timani Naniseni praised Vava’u’s commitment and preparation, noting their well-deserved victory. The General Secretary, Mr Lui ‘Aho also announced plans to make the TDS Major Tournament a biannual event, citing the tournament’s success.
Vava’u’s coach, Fetuli Tulanga, expressed his joy and pride in the team:
“This victory is a result of tireless effort and dedication. I’m so proud of the players for proving that hard work pays off.”

Tournament MVP, Siaki Lonitenisi, shared his gratitude and echoed Vava’u’s fighting spirit:
“We came here with a mission to fulfill Vava’u’s 11th Law, Lolo na’a to, meaning Vava’u never backs down. I’m thankful to my teammates for their hard work and unity.”
