The Talent Development Scheme (TDS) Mini Tournament held last Saturday successfully marked the conclusion of the 2025 TDS activities, bringing together young footballers from across Tongatapu in a celebration of development, progress, and hard work.
The tournament served as the final event of the 2025 TDS programme, following a 24 week of intensive physical conditioning sessions for TDS players, along with three Mini Tournaments conducted in Tongatapu during the season. These competitions provided valuable match experience and an opportunity for players to showcase the skills and understanding they have developed under the TDS framework.
One of the major highlights of the 2025 TDS programme as explained by TDS Manager, Hemaloto Polovili was the successful launch of the TDS Centre in ʻEua, becoming the fifth TDS centre established in Tonga. This milestone reflects the continued growth of the programme and its commitment to expanding high-quality development opportunities for young players nationwide.
The programme has also seen strong outcomes in player progression, with several TDS graduates featuring prominently in national youth teams. In particular, performances from players involved in the U15 Development Team and U16 National teams’ competition demonstrated the effectiveness of the TDS pathway in preparing young athletes for higher levels of football.
Mr Polovili acknowledges the dedication and tireless work of all 16 TDS coaches across the country, including those from ʻEua and Vavaʻu, whose commitment has been central to the success of the programme. Appreciation is also extended to FIFA for its continued support through funding, which has played a vital role in the delivery and sustainability of the TDS activities.
“Special thanks are extended to Kilifi Uele and Jag for their leadership and ongoing support in upskilling TDS coaches, helping raise coaching standards across the programme” added Polovili.
The support of parents and local clubs is also gratefully acknowledged, as their encouragement and cooperation continue to strengthen the development environment for young players.
As the 2025 TDS season comes to a close, the final Mini Tournament stands as a fitting conclusion to a year focused on development, opportunity, and laying strong foundations for what lies ahead in 2026 football in Tonga.
End.
