Tonga’s Junior Mataliki closed out their OFC U-19 Women’s Championship 2025 campaign with pride, defeating tournament hosts Tahiti 2-1 in a spirited contest at Stade Punaruu, Pape’ete, to claim 5th place overall.
After falling agonisingly short of a semi-final berth with a 2-1 loss to Fiji in their final pool match, Tonga regrouped to face Tahiti, who were also eliminated from semi-final contention. The encounter was played in wet conditions, but that didn’t stop the Junior Mataliki from showcasing their grit and determination.
Tonga came out with intent, using the strong wind behind them to apply constant pressure high up the field. Long balls into the attacking third created opportunities, while the midfield worked tirelessly to keep Tahiti pinned back.
Captain Tama’a Faletau proved to be the difference early on, striking twice in the opening spell. Her first came after sustained pressing, as she slotted a low strike past Tahitian goalkeeper to open the scoring. Minutes later, Faletau doubled Tonga’s lead, showing great composure in the box with a clean finish that reflected her leadership and finishing quality.
The supporting cast also made their mark, forwards Sophiana Moala and Anna Pongi combined smartly to carve chances, with Pongi nearly capitalising on a defensive slip before the Tahiti Goalkeeper recovered. Midfielders Sofi Hale and Tema Tonga controlled possession, feeding their attackers and keeping the pressure on the hosts.

Despite trailing 2-0, Tahiti weren’t without chances. Wingers provided energy down the right, linking with Hereana Brothers to trouble Tonga on the counter. Their combinations stretched Tonga’s defence, forcing the backline led by centre-backs Vika Mafi and ‘Anau Lopeti into crucial clearances.
In the second half, Tahiti grew stronger pushing forward, creating overlaps and movement around the final third. A golden chance fell when their striker found space inside the box, but Tongan goalkeeper Wolfgramm produced a brave stop to preserve the lead.
The pressure finally told when Tahiti earned a corner midway through the second half. Catherine Teikihaa latched onto the delivery and finished cleanly, pulling the hosts back into the contest at 2-1.
With Tahiti pushing numbers forward, Tonga were forced into a disciplined defensive display. Fullbacks Anamalia Vahe and ‘Ana Talasinga made key interventions, while midfielders tracked back tirelessly to break up attacks. Despite the host nation’s late surge, the Junior Mataliki stood firm and saw out the match to secure 5th place.
Head Coach Mark ‘Uhatahi was full of praise for his side’s resilience and growth over the tournament:
“My players did a great job today. I’m really happy and almost lost for words, but proud that everything we prepared for came together in this game. To go out with a win against the host is special. Lastly, I want to thank all the Tongan community here in Tahiti for the support and love they gave us throughout the tournament.”
The result capped a positive showing for Tonga at the championship. Despite missing out on a semi-final spot by the narrowest of margins, the Junior Mataliki showed progress and promise. With standout performances from senior leaders like captain Tama’a Faletau, as well as emerging talents such as Moala, Pongi, and goalkeeper Filimone, the foundation is strong for future OFC competitions.
End.
