The Tonga National U 19 women’s team won their friendly game against MaClean College on Friday night before the kick off the OFC U-19 Women’s Championship 2017.
The Tonga squad was the first one to arrive to New Zealand for the OFC U – 19 Women’s Championship 2017, and they have arranged one friendly game as part of their final preparation for the upcoming championship.
The team lines up were, Akolo the goal keeper, Moala, Tufui, Latavao and Tuípulotu were the defenders, while Lutu, Talasinga, Taliaúli and Taholo were the midfielders then Fifita and Kafa were the striker!
In the first twenty minutes, both teams were both aggressive and very energetic, and few times MaClean had a chance to put in a goal but Akolo the Tongan goalkeeper had to make a terrific save from different distance.
It was Tonga, though, who opened the scoring after 26 minutes, Lutu superbly set her up, intercepting just inside MaClean’s half and outpacing three defenders including MaClean’s goal keeper before laying it on a plate to Kafa to finish simply.
The second goal for Tonga was Lutu surged forward and beat the MaClean’s goalkeeper with a high strong ball to the far left.
The Tonga team dominated the second half as MaClean defenders could not marked the Tongan striker, Feke who make a run to one of Lutu’s long ball and she finished it to the net for Tonga’s third goal. The fourth goal was an owned goal and the final goal for Tonga was a through ball and Kafa was the last attacker in the front row and she pushed it to the far post but the MaClean’s goal keeper was on the other side.
The Head Coach for MaClean’s Football team is Daniel Cope was happy with the result of his team but he’s so impressed with the Tongans.
‘’I thought the Tongans were really awesome, they played according to what their game plan, and they really pretty set up. This is the first time for my team to play a national team, and I believe we all grateful for the opportunity. The credit goes to the Tongans, and I’m sure my girls will be coming to support the Tongans during the OFC U – 19 Women’s Championship, wishing the Tongans the very best,’’ says Cope.
During the dinner that MaClean College hosted, Coach Cope announced the Girl of the Match, goes to Tonga #7, Seini Lutu!
The Tongan Head Coach, Christian Koaneti was so happy as his team played exactly what he wanted them to play.
‘’First of all I would like to thank the team for their efforts that they put together to win this game, I am so excited for the fact, they played according to my game plan. Well done girls, but don’t forget there are few things that we need to improve before the qualifiers’’.

The OFC U – 19 Women’s Championship will kick off on the 11th to 24th July, with six teams participating. There are New Zealand, Papua New Guinea, Fiji, New Caledonia, Samoa and Tonga. Tonga will take Fiji for their first game on Match Day 1.
